During a typical dental cleaning, the dentist or hygienist at Manhattan Dental Design may remove any outer stains or tartar deposits on teeth, provide advice about proper cleaning techniques for teeth or dentures and assess any need for fluoride. Your dentist will also take dental X-rays during your general dentistry treatment. These are an integral part of the exam because it’s an informative diagnostic tool both for the patient as well as the doctor.
A dental X-ray allows the dentist to see detailed images of your mouth that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Various types of dental X-rays are as follows:
This type of X-ray allows the dentist to see the crowns of the upper and lower teeth located in towards the back of a patient’s mouth.
Allows the dentist to see the entire tooth and the surrounding bone for possible abscess or tooth decay.
Gives the dentist a broad view of the bones and joints connecting the jaws of a patient.
Comprehensive Dental Exams
It’s very important for the patient to disclose all medications or supplements presently being taken. Medical conditions should also be revealed. Diabetes, heart disease and organ transplants are some examples of medical conditions that need to be discussed during treatment planning. Many medical conditions may require a patient to be pre-medicated. Medications that contribute to dry mouth are well known to increase the risk of tooth decay. Oral prosthetics such as dentures, partials and bridges will be examined for proper fitting. Necessary adjustments such as relines can be discussed or made that day.
Oral Cancer Exam
Another service offered by Manhattan Dental Design is oral cancer screening. The dentist will carry out an exam specifically designed to detect signs of mouth or throat cancers. Areas of concern include the jaw, around the neck, the inside of the lips, cheeks and the surface of the gums.
