Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a prosthetic tooth-shaped “cap” placed over a tooth using special dental cement to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength and improve its overall appearance.

When Is a Dental Crown Needed?

  • Protect a tooth previously damaged by large amounts of decay or certain types of fractures
  • Restore an already broken or severely worn tooth
  • When very little original tooth is left, crowns are necessary to cover the remaining tooth
  • Dental bridge
  • To cover severely discolored teeth such as staining deep inside a tooth structure
  • Used to top a dental implant
  • Improving a patient’s appearance

Restore Cracked or Damaged Teeth

In the case of a cracked or damaged tooth, it is imperative to see a dental professional for general dentistry to save it. The dentist will examine the tooth and make recommendations to provide you with all the options to save your tooth. Veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain or composite resin placed over the front surfaces of the teeth to improve a patient’s appearance.

Tooth-colored composite material can be used to rebuild a broken or damaged tooth. In most cases this requires only one appointment, and the results will look natural, are long-lasting and durable. Crowns may be made from gold, porcelain or a combination. They’re used by a dentist to restore and reinforce a weakened, broken or otherwise damaged tooth.

Dental Inlays and Onlays

When a tooth is too damaged to support a tooth filling, but not damaged enough for a dental crown, you end up needing something in the middle. Capping a damaged tooth unnecessarily with a dental crown removes more tooth structure than needed, while a large dental filling can weaken the remaining structure of the tooth, causing the tooth to break, crack or eventually need a root canal. Dental onlays and inlays could be described as somewhere between dental fillings and dental crowns.
