Crowns Q&A

What are crowns?

Crowns are dental restorations used to cover and support a damaged or decaying tooth. Dr. Tchoi bonds a crown on top of your natural tooth, improving its size, strength, shape, and appearance.

Crowns are tough and long-lasting. They’re made of materials like porcelain or ceramic and match the appearance and light-reflecting properties of tooth enamel. That ensures they blend in with your teeth and look natural.

What oral problems can crowns treat?

At Manhattan Dental Design, Dr. Tchoi uses crowns for various reasons, including to:

  • Restore broken or worn-down teeth
  • Protect teeth from decay
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Attach to a dental implant
  • Cover discolored or misshapen teeth

Dr. Tchoi also uses crowns to make cosmetic modifications.

What does getting crowns involve?

Getting crowns typically takes two appointments spaced several weeks apart.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Tchoi conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and takes X-rays using the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanner. After determining the extent of the damage or decay, he develops a custom treatment plan.

Dr. Tchoi administers a local anesthetic to numb your mouth and prepares your tooth to receive a crown. He carefully removes a layer of enamel from the top and sides and eradicates visible decay. Dr. Tchoi then takes impressions of your tooth and sends them to a laboratory that manufactures a custom crown.

A week or two later, you return to Manhattan Dental Design. Dr. Tchoi lines the crown over your damaged tooth, bonds it in place, polishes it, and removes any excess material. Lastly, he assesses your bite and sends you home with a list of care instructions.

Do crowns last forever?

Crowns are tough and incredibly sturdy, but they won’t last forever. To extend the life of your crown, Dr. Tchoi recommends practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly, and visit Manhattan Dental Design every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

To avoid chips, cracks, or other damage, avoid bad habits like nail-biting, opening objects with your teeth, or biting down on hard objects like popcorn kernels and ice cubes. By following these tips, crowns can last for 10-15 years and sometimes even longer.
