Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain bonded to your teeth. They cover minor imperfections, allowing you to achieve an attractive smile.

You can choose to get only one or two veneers, but Dr. Tchoi typically recommends getting between six and eight. Doing so provides a more symmetrical, balanced look.

Veneers blend in and look like natural tooth enamel. This ensures no one knows you’ve undergone cosmetic dentistry.

What types of imperfections can veneers mask?

At Manhattan Dental Design, Dr. Tchoi uses veneers to mask various imperfections, including:

  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Uneven coloring or severe discoloration
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Teeth that are unusually shaped

Dr. Tchoi also uses veneers to cover gaps and spaces between teeth.

What does getting veneers involve?

Getting veneers begins with a thorough in-office consultation. During your appointment, Dr. Tchoi reviews your oral health history and conducts an oral exam. He then asks about your goals for treatment and takes a series of X-rays using the on-site cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanner.

After gathering the necessary information, Dr. Tchoi administers a local anesthetic and removes about a millimeter of enamel from each tooth. He takes impressions of your teeth and sends them to a dental laboratory that manufactures your custom veneers from porcelain.

Several weeks later you return to Manhattan Dental Design. Dr. Tchoi lines up your veneers, bonds them in place, trims any excess material, and polishes them. Afterward, he provides you with a list of care instructions and sends you home.

Do veneers last forever?

Veneers don’t last forever, but with routine maintenance, you can keep them in optimal condition for 10-15 years.

Dr. Tchoi recommends practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, floss regularly, and visit Manhattan Dental Design twice a year for an exam and professional cleaning.

To prevent chips, cracks, or other damage, avoid bad habits like nail-biting, opening objects with your teeth, and biting down on hard objects like popcorn kernels.
